Visit Mears in West Michigan
The town of Mears was settled by the pioneer and lumber baron Charles Mears. It is located in Golden Township, west of Hart and south of Pentwater. Nearby are the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Hart-Montague Trail State Park, and Little Sable Point Lighthouse.
The Oceana County Historical & Genealogical Society has been instrumental in preserving the history of the area. The society operates the Oceana Historical Park Museum Complex on Fox Road in Mears. The museum complex is open weekends from 1pm-4pm in June, July and August.
Buildings in the complex include the Swift Lathers Museum, home of the Mearz News, the world's smallest newspaper; Tool Museum with farm tools, logging equipment and dairy machinery; Boynton Cottage Museum; Robinson Museum housing an old-time laundry, dentist and doctor offices and post office; and Transportation Museum. Nearby are the Swedish Church built in 1898 and the Old Town Hall housing the country school room and exhibits.
